Homestay families will provide an opportunity for you to practice English and immerse yourself in the Australian culture. You will receive both breakfast and dinner each day and your room will have a bed and a desk. While you cannot think of yourself as a guest in a hotel, you must also realise that you are not at home with your own family. Expect things to be done very differently. Meals, chores, rules and responsibilities will differ. Family structures also vary because of the many races, cultures and ethnic origins that exist in Australia. Every family has a different way of doing things, different values, and different expectations of each family member. Learning to fit into the family will require an understanding of the background culture and values and this understanding is something that you are trying to gain. Share-accommodation

You can arrange your own share-accommodation before you arrive or TIES. The price varies with this type of accommodation and can range from $140- $200/week. Share-accommodation involves sharing a house with other people and the cost of living is also shared. There are different rules for each share-house and the cost usually depends on the room size and suburb. Most share-housing will require a bond (a security deposit) of two weeks rent, in addition to paying your weekly/fortnightly rent in advance.

Backpacker accommodation

You can arrange your own backpacker accommodation at a local backpacker lodge or TIES student services can organise that for you on your arrival. Each Backpacker has different types of rooms from dorms to doubles. Staying at a Backpacker would only suit a student staying for a short amount of time.

General Rules to Follow

♦ Try to speak English as much as possible.
♦ Say 'Hello', 'Goodbye', 'Goodnight', 'please', 'thank-you' as appropriate
♦ Lock the doors and all windows when you leave.
♦ Turn off all appliances, lights and fans etc when you leave your accommodation.
♦ Turn the television and lights off at night.
♦ Clean the bathroom after you use it.
♦ Clean the kitchen after you use it and remember to turn off the oven.
